A Pastoral Reflection, Pentecost Week Nine, a Second Summer of Pandemic Living — July 23, 2021

I’ve been re-reading a favorite Christian writer.  She’s my go-to when I need a little infusion of spiritual oomph.  Julian lived in Norwich, England in the twelfth century, but her wisdom is unbounded by time or culture.
Here’s a little gem from Julian:

Take the image of the hazel nut.  What incidents in your life today seem as small and insignificant as this hazel nut?  Imagine God’s concern and love for you in these small things.  What small things distracted you from the experience of God’s love today? When did you remember to rest in God?

When, in these summer days, the light is bright and days are long, I especially need to remember to rest in God.  It’s just so tempting to take on more and more and more.

But no.  Remember to rest in God.  There are birds singing for all to hear.  Bees humming too.  Waves crashing, voices laughing.  If you call me and it goes to voicemail, I’ll call back soon.  Right now I’m remembering to rest in God.

In the Love of Christ,
Pr. Beth
