We never planned to make history did we? And yet we are doing just that as people living through a world-wide pandemic. All those old bible stories about plagues? Who could have guessed that we would experience one ourselves. But here we are.
Plagues shaped the faith of people in ancient times. It’s still doing that now. It causes us to wrestle with our understanding of God. And those questions are in the Bible too. How is God saving us from this? Where is God now? Does God really listen when we cry out?
Last week I shared a piece of writing from Lady Julian on Norwich. But I didn’t mention that during her lifetime, plagues roared through her own locality more than once. She knew the devastation of death by rampant disease. (By the way, last week I got the century in which Julian lived wrong – she was born in the mid-fourteenth century).
In fact, one of the most popular of all Lady Julian’s sayings was one I have quoted before: All shall be well; and all shall be well; and all manner of things shall be well. This came to her in a vision at a time when she was asking her own hard questions about God’s intentions toward humankind. She heard this as God’s loving response to her. And so she found peace.
If we have to make history, let’s make it the best way we can. So. Peace. Peace to creation. Peace to humankind. Peace to you.
