In a search for Sunday worship music this week I came across the hymn “Where Charity and Love Prevail”. I like the tune but it became stuck in my head and I’ve been humming it for days now. That can be irritating, but I decided instead that perhaps the Holy Spirit might be trying to get something into my heart.
Where charity and love prevail, there God is ever found. Yes. It’s simple enough. I’m constantly amazed at where I encounter God, even as a person whose vocation is serving the church. And since charity and love are spiritual gifts, they are straight from God.
But when I dwell on it more, I realize that it isn’t just that God is in present in every act of charity and love. It’s that when we do not encourage and practice these virtues, we are far from God. We don’t always feel full of charity and love, of course. But that’s when we need most of all to be intentional about it.
I guess I do think that we are all capable of charity and love. And if we are followers of the Way of Christ, these are not optional for us. So I will thank you for always holding me accountable, and I hope that you will let me ask the same of you.
Blessings!
